Testing Principles of Viscometer 1. Vibration Damping The viscosity of a liquid is measured by gauging the attenuation of vibrations induced by a vibrating body. When the vibrating body oscillates within the liquid, the vibration is attenuated due to the viscous resistance generated in the liquid. By measuring the degree of this attenuation, the viscosity of the liquid can be calculated. 2. Pressure Loss The viscosity of a liquid is measured by measuring the flow rate and pressure drop of the fluid as it passes through a pipeline. The liquid flows through a pipeline set to maintain a constant flow rate, and the pressure drop is measured. If the liquid has a high viscosity, the pressure drop will be large, thus enabling the measurement of viscosity. 3. Falling Speed (Time) The viscosity of a liquid is measured by measuring the speed at which a small ball falls into the liquid and the time it takes for the liquid to flow downward. The falling speed of the ball and the flow time of the fluid depend on the viscosity of the liquid. Therefore, by measuring this speed, the viscosity of the liquid can be calculated. The rotational viscometer is the world standard for viscosity measurement.
